One role of the associate pastor, or preacher in the second chair, is to find ways to compliment the first chair preacher while living out his or her call to preach. While some elements of preaching overlap with solo, lead, or senior preaching, my intent in this thesis is to draw upon my own experience and that of other associates, assistants, or other multi-staff preachers. I look to available resources that address serving as an associate pastor and pull into conversation with my own context and experience the reflections of other current or past associate pastors. I suggest a threefold model for the preacher serving as associate as one who speaks (1) periodically, (2) to the periphery, and (3) poetically and prophetically.
