Over time, performance styled worship service at Fourth Avenue Baptist Church (FABC) has made the congregation a better audience than worshipping community. Several turn-overs in ministerial leadership has led to lack of consistent attention to the theology and meaning of worship. Christian worship communicates on behalf of the church community, who God is, how God is valued and our relationship to God. Liturgical theology gave a theological basis to explanation of worship. The primary biblical example used is Moses’ encounter with God in Exodus 3: 1 -12. The change theory applied is "Asset Based Community Development". The goal has been to make the act of worship a response to God’s grace, and galvanize the congregational identity as witnesses to God in the world. The interventions have included: 1) a sermon series on theology and worship, 2) the training of a small group on liturgical theology, ABCD and parallel decision making, and 3) experiments in worship design. A pro-active research method was used for evaluation.
