Prophetic preaching can and should address the contemporary issues of power, privilege, and prejudice which are the components of racism. Prophetic preaching is defined as preaching that calls people into God’s vision for justice, peace, and equality in our world. It is especially incumbent upon white preachers in predominantly white congregations and denominations to preach prophetically against the sin of racism. The author combines the methodology of Eunjoo Mary Kim, along with the prophetic preaching guidelines of Jan Schnell Rippentrop into a methodology called kaleidoscopic prophetic preaching. Preachers are encouraged to use a “rhetoric of appeals” and focus on the beauty of God’s grace while bringing in stories and examples from other cultures where God is acting in the world. This method of prophetic preaching can help the listeners hear the message of God’s grace and move from charity alone to justice.
