In this thesis I will explore the role of the preacher in relationship with the congregation. Drawing on theatrical theory, I will explore the ways in which the relationship between preacher and congregation can draw insight from the example of how the theatre understands the relationship between actor and audience. In partnership with rhetorical, ritual, and literary theories I will utilize the forms and tools of the theatre to define and explore a four-step process in finding true partnership between preacher and congregation: l) redefining the role ofthe preacher; 2) inviting the congregation into dialogue and therefore active participation in the preaching event; 3) calling the congregation into new community through the intense shared experience which a preaching partnership can provide; 4) celebrating the new communal relationship through festival preaching. Through this process, a new image ofpartnership can emerge: the congregation as company.
