"Missio" means sending: for the church, it refers to God's use of God's people to advance God's vision for the world. As a guideline for preaching, a missional perspective gives clarity about the problem of embracing God's alternate reality. It does so by drawing attention to the ways that the church is part of the problem when it reflects the values of dominant culture, and part of the solution inasmuch as it teaches and embodies counter-culturality: inviting every listener to choose the singular narrative and the alternative way of being that we learned from Jesus. Delivering that invitation into the lives of listeners demands a focus on the reality of God's agency that is well served by missional preaching.
