In the church the Sunday morning sermon is an important agent of change. The United Church of Canada is attempting to change its broken relationship with First Peoples in Canada. As a preacher I believe that the change must begin with the congregations and how their understanding of what forgiveness and reconciliation are. With the work of reconciliation expert Bishop Desmond Tutu and preaching expert Sarah Travis I will be exploring how they may assist the change. I will examine how a congregation’s attitude changes to those who are often seen as different and how they might make space for them to feel they have a place in the church as well. I will also examine the relationship of the Trinity and offer the life giving grace found in it as alternative to more traditional atonement theologies.
