Dr. Frank Thomas' formula for celebration and Dr. Henry Mitchell's cognitive - emotive - intuitive consciousness teachings can be used in even the most traditional and formal liturgical settings to bring about increased passion resulting in transformation of both preacher and congregation. Taking on these goals have led to a stark improvement in my ability to preach with passion, liveliness, authenticity, and always, always with celebration. This conclusion was reached based on the results of a three year study of two traditional, formal congregations. Class notes and exercises, observation of videotaped sermons, extensive meetings with two Parish Project Groups who assisted in the development of written and oral surveys, feedback from my advisor and professors, and a parish forum were all used to determine the success of this endeavor. In this paper I show my context and challenges over the course of a three year journey through sermon projects and class learnings. I close with a section on practical tips for other preachers eager to work on their delivery and passion, as well as sample sermons so that the reader can see the progression made from year one to year three.
