This thesis context is a small African American senior adult congregation in Chicago, Illinois, whose concern centers on the young adult population of the church continuing the ministry of service long established by them. Using an Inductive method, I intend to present data about "the heroic ideal" from Neo-Jungian psychology and the "idea of courage" from Tillichian thought to assess the innate desire of young adults to participate in heroic actions "in" and/or "beyond" the congregation. The pragmatic problem is to demonstrate how preaching "narrative stories" on "the idea of the hero" can offer suggestive methods to give young adults ways to establish their own personal service and ministry "in" and/or "outside" the congregation.
